In this new series we talk about personal taste.
First up our very own Boris van Rijckevorsel
founder and creative director of Spijk
What is your personal style signifier
It’s a vintage shooting coat, that I stumbled upon in one of my favourite shops. It really fitted like a glove. It is very timeless, I love classic pieces, they never go out of style. I really don’t like fashion it goes out of style so quickly. I wear my clothes years on end till they fall apart.
Sites that inspire you
The sea in general really inspires me. I can stand on a beach for hours and listen to the waves crashing onto the shore. It is a very comforting sound, it’s peaceful in a way but if you consider that under the surface there is a completely diffrent world we know less of than space, it gets intriguing. I love sea creatures they inspired me to design our new line of pocket squares.
The best souvenir you brought home
Is a bottle of olive oil from Rhodes. It was made by the shop owner in a small village. The taste is incredible, it really is completely different from of the shelf oils you find in supermarkets. The best way to describe it is you drizzle the island on your food.
The best book you read past year
That’s the small history of Amsterdam by Geert Mak. It is a wonderful book about the turbulent origins of the city, and tells story’s trough the eyes of its citizens. The book starts in the dark ages and ends in the 90’s. it is really cool if you visit the Rijks museum you understand the stories behind most paintings.
A recent find
Is Little Collins in the Pijp, I just discovered it last week. They serve awsome brunch and pimms, you should try the frank smokehouse salmon it’s really good. I am going to eat there at least once a week for the rest of the year.
The last item of clothing added to your wardrobe
A navy blue william lockie sweater. They make the best knitwear in the world and last for years. I really love this brand
The best gift given recently
Was a bottle of Mommasin Brouilly ’14. It’s a wonderful wine from southern Beaujolais made of 100% gamay and really reflects the terroir.
Best one received
Was a city trip to Maastricht. I really love the city, it’s like being abroad the atmosphere there has nothing to do with the rest of the Netherlands. There are more german, belgian and french inflouences than Dutch and much more joy de vivre. I really needed that break.
The last meal that truly inspired you
Was at bridges in the Grand hotel Amsterdam . We came in for a quick bite but we were placed in the michelin starred section by mistake. So in a bit of a rush we sadly couldn’t go for the full menu. The staff was very good and understanding. I had the langustine and pork belly in jasmine tea, a really wonderful dish. I want to go back soon for the full experience.
The grooming staple you’re never without
Is my Phillips pro beard trimmer. Do I need to say more? Being a bearded guy you always walk a thin line between elegant and savage.
